Congenital tracheal stenosis due to complete tracheal rings is a life-threatening problem requiring surgical treatment in most cases. Approximately half of children with congenital tracheal stenosis also have congenital heart anomalies.

Surgical management generally includes slide tracheoplasty that is performed on cardiopulmonary bypass. Associated cardiovascular anomalies are addressed during the same procedure.

Successful treatment requires a team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, otolaryngologists and anesthesiologists. With experienced specialists in all of these areas, MUSC Children's Health has excelled in the treatment of these complex patients. To date, our one-year survival rate after slide tracheoplasty is 100%.
