Some children with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract patients cannot absorb enough nutrients from their food and require intravenous nutrition. We work with our multidisciplinary team to help your child’s gut adapt, or learn how to absorb nutrients, while ensuring optimized growth and development.

Our IRP team consists of a gastroenterologist, neonatologist, pharmacist, dietitian, and a surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Intestinal Failure (IF) is a condition where a patient cannot absorb enough nutrition and fluid from their intestine in order to maintain hydration, growth, and development. This requires providing nutrition and hydration, through an intravenous line. The most common reason for intestinal failure is short bowel syndrome (SBS) which is a malabsorptive condition that results from resection of bowel. In pediatric patients, the most common reasons for SBS are: necrotizing enterocolitis, mid-gut volvulus, small bowel atresia, or gastroschisis.

During your child’s IRP clinic visit you will meet with a pediatric gastroenterologist, pharmacist, dietitian, and if needed, our surgeon. We will review growth, laboratory tests, central line status, feeding regimen, and address any concerns you may have. We may get additional laboratory tests during the visit in addition to making changes to your child’s nutrition regimen or medications.

Research

The MUSC Pediatric IRP Program is also proud to participate in the International Intestinal Failure Registry (IFR). The IFR creates a large international database that can serve as a repository to promote research and help develop management guidelines for patients enrolled in intestinal rehabilitation programs.
